May is Foot Health Month!!

This year marks the 18th annual Foot Health Month.  The purpose of this campaign is to increase public awareness and promote proper foot health, as well as prevention of costly foot problems.
This year’s theme is giving yourself the gift of healthy feet, encouraging everyone to remove their socks and check their feet or have their feet checked.

During the month of May, local Chiropodist Olga Lalande of the Barrie Foot Clinic invites everyone and anyone to drop by to enter for a chance to win a gift basket and receive information about foot conditions and foot care.  Also, all proceeds from the purchase of diabetic socks during the month of May will be donated to the Diabetes Association. Our mission is to uphold the standards of the profession and foster excellence in foot care.  Foot Health Month is a great vehicle to educate the public on the importance of proper foot care, and the prevention of foot problems.

Some foot facts:

A human foot & ankle is a strong, mechanical structure that contains 26 bones, 33 joints and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments.

75 percent of us will experience foot health problems of varying degrees of severity at one time or another in our lives.

Despite the fact that so many people experience foot pain, only a fraction of people with foot pain seek medical treatment.  The reason?  Many people have the erroneous notion that their feet are supposed to hurt.

When you walk, the forces borne by your feet are about one and one half times your body weight.  When you’re running, it can be three to four times your weight.  When you jump, forces can exceed eight times your body weight.
